My name is Levon James I am a senior here at Chicago State University. Since, my arrival at this university, I have worked toward being a valued member of this institution. I have achieved this goal by becoming a very active member of this university. Many examples of this can be found on my resume. My co-curricular activities are important to me however, my education is first at this juncture in my life. I believe that with continued support from this university, I will have the tools to become successful in this highly competitive world.

As a senator of the SGA I have been very involved in bringing the major issues of the university to the SGA. My proposals have been broad and inclusive my, goals were to represent all members of CSU. Some years ago I was told that the best way to change a neighborhood, city, or even a nation is to invest in the areas you come from. By offering goods and services to individuals at a price that fits the economic situation in your neighborhood. So, if you become a doctor practice in your neighborhood or if you are a land developer you’d develop the areas within your neighborhood; the ultimate goal being to slowly bring every neighborhood across the nation to a better economic situation. As the B.O.T. Rep. I have brought hard work and accountability to the position. I fought for fair treatment of students, the one stop system for registration, U-pass, 40 new internships for students, and Map Grant / equitable funding. Finally, at CSU I plan to continue bringing that type of thinking to my position and serve the university at large.

The road to graduation has not been without its share of bumps. In Fall 07 I had my worst semester in my college career; after careful evaluation I realized that my poor performance was attributed to my poor study habits and my employment at Best Buy. Since I drew that conclusion I voluntarily ended my employment at Best Buy and took a job working at the library, I also re-committed myself to academic excellence. The next semester with a full course load I received a 4.0 (making the Dean’s list for the first time in my college career). The following semester I received a 3.33; this was not what my target G.P.A. but I am somewhat satisfied considering that my home and nearly all of my possessions were burned to the ground on November 21st 2008, just two weeks from finals. This year came with another major loss as my grandmother Louise Clark passed on January 7, 2009 this was a major blow to my family and me however, it is important for me to remember the best way to honor her is through success. This will not be an easy task especially with my current co-curricular, work, and school schedule my school days start at 11am and ends at 10pm Monday thru Wednesday. With a solid work ethic, commitment, and time management I am confident that I will succeed in reaching my academic goals as well as make an impact on my university before I graduate.
